The daily battle for families to provide continues and we have started a Community Feeding Program to address the problem.
One of the main challenges that our teachers face are the effects of infant malnutrition in our school children. Almost every child who joins PCF school at the age of 4 years has stunted growth and an underdeveloped I.Q. due to not enough food in their most formative years. The children have a hard time learning and some children are unable to progress to higher grades but have to re sit their grade level for another school year, while others have clear learning disabilities and difficulty with speech.
By feeding children from infancy we can ensure that a balanced healthy diet is maintained and as these will be our future students, they have every chance of success when they start school. In addition to this there are 62 elderly people who have worked all their lives as waste pickers and have now in their twillight years resorted to begging from their neighbours to feed them and some elderly are still trying to earn their income as waste pickers.
